Daylight Saving Time Geography
DST began in the US during WWI. Daylight saving time was invented in Paris by Ben Franklin and popularized in London by William Willett. It is a reasonable idea for those northern locations. Not so for Florida and other places in the south.

In the summer, the sun is up for a longer period each day than during the winter. In the northeastern US, most of this extra daylight comes in the morning. In New York City, the sun rises at 4:30 AM (Standard Time) or earlier during the entire month of June. By setting their clocks ahead an hour, people there can shift some of that daylight to their afternoon and evening hours, when it is more useful.

In Florida, the sun never rises much before 5:30 standard time. So, while New Yorkers are getting up in the daylight, Floridians who get up at the same hour are getting up in the dark. We have no "extra" daylight.
